Navigating the Winds of Change: Staying on Course in Business & in Life

"Change is the only constant!"
That statement made over 2,500 years ago certainly holds true today! The winds of change have challenged mankind throughout the ages. In just the last 150 years, think how radical the introductions of electricity, telephones, automobiles, and radio were to their particular time periods. In some ways, the challenges of change are nothing new, and the study of past windstorms can help us today. However, as the 21st century unfolds, there are reasons to believe we are experiencing unprecedented conditions. The winds are seemingly blasting from all directions. Change-storms seem more frequent and frontal systems less predictable based on past experiences. Basic support structures that helped us weather – even harness – previous changes are not as firmly grounded.  Indeed, even fundamental assumptions about safety and the world around us have been challenged through the recent terrorist attacks on our country.  Never before has our need been greater for skills in managing change effectively.
As leaders, we have personally experienced the powerful fronts of the storms. The hurricane forces of technology and equity market changes have ravaged entire companies and products almost overnight while providing extraordinary opportunity for people who have taken advantage of the conditions. We have found ourselves faced with needing new skills, new ways of doing things, even new ways of explaining the world around us. If this time of high change were only a random blip on the radar screen, perhaps we could just head below and weather out the storm. But the reality is that rapid and accelerating change is here to stay.

"Many helpful ideas, particularly the reminder that it is '10% what happens and 90% how I react' and the concept of having a personal instrument panel." M. Durham, Business Manager That being the case, it is our firm conviction that learning how to effectively manage change is one of the fundamental skills leaders must develop to be successful today. When you boil down the most challenging issues we face as leaders, you can almost always consider them in terms of managing change. Thus, it is critical we consider ourselves students of change, striving to understand the dynamics which change introduces, and to continually enhance our ability to not just survive but to thrive in an environment of ever increasing change.

The Institute's presentation on Navigating the Winds of Change focuses on two particular aspects of the topic. The first is how to deal with change on a personal basis – tools for how you can personally deal with the dizzying pace of change in your life. The second is how to manage change in your organization – tools to help you be more effective leading change when you step back into the windstorm after the presentation.  The session is available in a 45-60 minute keynote format, a 90-120 minute workshop session, or a half-day tutorial session.  The session is typically highly customized to your particular situation to maximize the benefit to all participants.  You can optionally include copies of my book Navigating the Winds of Change as an extra benefit to your participants.
